What is the truth about this tunnel of light people supposedly see in near death experiences?

First of all, let us note that this is a recent phenomenon. There are no recorded incidences of this type in Scripture. In fact, the Scriptures say that when a person dies, their thoughts perish.

Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help. His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Psalm 146:3-4, NKJV. Here is a similar verse: For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:5-6, NKJV. Or again: The dead do not praise the Lord, nor any who go down into silence. Psalm 115:17, NKJV. See also Isaiah 38:18.

We cannot base our beliefs of truth on experience instead of the Bible. All of our experiences in life should be tested by the Bible. And when they say to you, 'Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,' should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:19-20, NKJV.

So what is the truth about death?
