But I thought the soul was immortal.
Let's see what the Bible has to say. He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unnapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. 1 Timothy 6:15-16, NKJV.
Only God possesses immortality. Through Christ, He allows us to seek for immortality. God will render to each one according to his deeds: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality. Romans 2:7, NKJV.
The word "immortal" appears only once in all the Bible and it is revealed to us as an attribute of the eternal God. In all the 915 times that the words "soul" and "spirit" appear, never once is the term immortal applied to them. On the other hand, the Bible teaches eternal life through the resurrection. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed -- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 1 Corinthians 15:51-53, NKJV. Paul is clear. Immortality for humans, is given only at the return of Jesus to this world. This is why Paul calls the return of Jesus the blessed hope. Titus 2:13, NKJV.
But I've heard all my life that people go to heaven at death.
Ok, then what about this tunnel of light people see in near death experiences?
