Social Studies

  • Visit the Embassy of India's Information section and look under culture and monuments. What famous monument is in India? The Taj Mahal Who was it built by and why did he build it? built by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife, Mumtaj Mahal What did you learn about the other monuments? Answers will vary.
  • Visit Lonely Planet's map of India. What is the capital? Delhi What countries surround India (or India surrounds)? Pakistan, Nepal, China, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar Name two other big cities in India. Calcutta and Mumbai or Bombay Here are pictures from one of them.
  • Read about the history of India from Lonely Planet. What country colonized India in the late 1700s, early 1800s? Britain When India wanted to become independent, describe the major challenges they faced (hint: it's related to religion). The Muslims wanted their own country and finally split. The exodus and relocating was accompanied by much violence and many people died. Why do you think India and Pakistan don't get along? How do you think the nuclear testing affects this relationship? Answers will vary here. They should realize that they used to live together, but when they split, Muslims killed Hindus and Hindus killed Muslims. This violence still goes on in both countries.
